Consumer class actions introduced into German law in the wake of “Dieselgate” scandal – a tightly regulated but risky process for businesses

On November 1, 2018, a new law was enacted in Germany that allows consumer groups to bring class actions against corporations.
German lawmakers rushed to pass the new law in the wake of the “Dieselgate” scandal over car emissions fraud, where a large number of compensation claims were at risk of becoming time-barred at the end of the year 2018.
